Carl was loyal and steadfast through the years. Although the Rock Island Railroad was in perilous shape for years before it was liquidated, Carl would not resign to accept an offer from the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad's Corporate Planning Department until the head of Finance and Accounting at the Rock Island told him it was perfectly honorable to do so. Thereafter, Carl joined my department at the ICG, and I was fortunate to work with him. His experience and intuitive sense of the required analysis allowed us to bring our responsibilities to fruition. Carl was intensely loyal to railroading. He and I both knew that, once Congress gave the railroads the right to compete, the industry would turn around, and it surely did, beginning in 1986, a watershed year. Carl was a good friend during the many years we lived only a few blocks apart in Winnetka. I sometimes helped crew his sailboat that was moored in Wilmette Harbor. Carl also generously allowed me to play his Steinway grand piano, keeping it tuned for me and other friends. His life was well lived. I will surely miss him.

The two places on earth Carl loved the most were Norway and Hawaii. His 25 last Christmases he spent with friends, on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. I and my family were lucky to share most of these Christmases with him and we all had a wonderful time there. And when we returned home to Norway he spent another 4-5 weeks there to get away from a long and cold winter in Chicago. Here are a few of some hundred photos I have as memories from these unforgettable vacations. Astri

So nice to remember Carl's wonderful visits to Norway, hiking in the mountains, enjoying the beauty of it to the fullest. He must have been in Norway almost 20 times visiting our family, joining us at the hut, climbing mountains - and so proud in later years that he could still make it to the top. Astri
