Rex was so fully alive that it is almost impossible to understand that he is gone. He was most alive with us when spending time with the kids. Rex wasn't one to arrange playdates and watch the kids play out back. He WAS the playdate - wrestling, playing, and encouraging the kids in a big immature pile of awesomeness. Rex did not embarrass easily - he would play the craziest of games and make believe along with the kids no matter what (often dialing the craziness up a notch). He was able to tease and love at the same time, and could be comforting and rough house all in the same game. In other words, he was an incredible father and my kids adored him. Rex sets the tone for fatherhood because he never really grew up himself. And while he was incredibly accomplished professionally - that success never went to his ego or his head. He was still a big kid at heart. And I loved the nights where we would skip rope, drink beers, love the kids, make fun of the kids, and bond as a collection of parents figuring out life, our first condos, our first homes, and parenthood together.
