Obituary of Scott P. Culpepper

Scott Paul Culpepper passed away May 12, 2021. He was the loving son of the late Hoyt McKinley Culpepper and the late Delores Ann Dusenbery born on October 31, 1955 in Denver, Colorado. He and his parents subsequently returned to Chicago, Illinois. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife Ellen (nee Eizenga) of 28 years, his stepfather Ken Reddy Sr., his brother Ken (Tamonwan) Reddy. He is the brother-in-law of Beth (Kerry) George, Clare (Leona) Eizenga, Deanna (Mark) Sharbono, Warren (Jeannie Gibson) Eizenga and loving uncle of many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He will be deeply missed. Scott attended several institutions of higher education. He received his BS/BA in marketing from Roosevelt University in 1978. He loved to tell tales of his exploits at those institutions like his being the 1975 DePaul billiards championship winner. He led the Triton College marketing team in a competition and started a marketing club at Roosevelt University serving as its 1st president. He also enjoyed being involved in a chess club. Scott had a plethora of jobs after graduation in which he met very interesting people. At his first job as a salesman of classified advertisements for the Chicago Sun Times, he was once called into the office of the Vice President of Advertising and Marketing. He was thinking he was in trouble and was a little apprehensive. The V.P. wanted him to pick up his wife from the airport who just happened to be actress Barbara Eden. She had just finished filming “Harper Valley PTA” in 1978. He was grateful for the backed up traffic on the expressway as he slowly drove her to their downtown apartment. penthouse and enjoyed talking with her. He was invited to come up and meet her family. While working at Sprint he was involved in a major car accident and spent a year in a hospital healing. He was contacted by the Oprah Winfrey show to talk about his experience and to possibly be a show guest. He was interviewed by Oprah for an entire hour although the guest opportunity did not happen. While working at a part-time job as a bartender in the Kona Kai bar at the O’Hare Marriott Hotel, he said to a man sitting at the bar "You look a lot like Don Kessinger, (the baseball player).” “Has anyone ever told you that before?" The man replied “no” and Scott informed him that he did look a lot like Kessinger. The man then confessed that he was indeed Don Kessinger. Scott was an enterprising man. With a friend they opened the very first tanning salon in the city of Chicago called “Tan Four Seasons.” He was ahead of his time. Later these types of salons became very popular businesses in many communities. Other jobs he has had include: copier sales, collections agent for student loan debt, security, a DSP (Direct Support Personnel) for developmentally disabled individuals in a group home setting, and he was the janitor at his home church, As a couple, Scott and Ellen enjoyed traveling. Some of their favorite vacation spots were cruising in the Panama Canal, the Bahamas, and in the Caribbean islands. They have been to Cozumel at least twice. Scott enjoyed playing on the piano, bike riding, and watching football.
