The news of Greg's passing is very sad. I've not had the opportunity to meet you, Kathy, Gerry, or Sandy but I wish to leave a memory of Greg.
Greg was my pledge son at the TKE fraternity. He joined me on the Wrestling team for a brief period, but found himself in an uphill battle for a chance to wrestle other than in practice. That did not matter.
Our chapter led the social activities on campus, led the student government, and led many charatable efforts. Greg participated in all of that and could be found midst the camaraderie at all times. He joined, pitched in and contributed. And he was a friend to all.
The steriotype fraternity man is that of a jock, drinking buddy, and rolicking non-student. We did all of that, yet left a legacy of outstanding leadership in our wake. The TKE house was a collection of young men who one day would lead their own family, or workplace, or friends. To a man they were achievers.
I was honored to have Greg stand at my side when I married my high schjool sweatheart, Karen. Greg knew her well as she also attended NIU. I regret that he and I did not stay connected after college, but we moved to the east coast and distance becomes a hinderance.
His passing hits hard. I should have been closer when he was in need. Thank you for being with Greg. Regards, Ross Phifer
