I met Richard in 1978 as freshmen at DePaul University. Richard was a witty, kind and honorable human being. I remember him as a fierce defender of the underdog who cared deeply about others. Having lost touch with Richard for well over 35 years, I encountered him again, in 2013, at mass at St. Mary of Buffalo Grove. He somehow remembered me and even reminded me of the night he escorted me to St. Joseph Hospital after I tore my left supraspinatus tendon while playing rugby at Montrose Harbor in 1980. Somehow Richard was there and he came through for me. Most recently I learned that he was feverishly looking for a job after leaving Allstate. Here is yet another stark reminder of how we must cherish all those people, like Richard, who we encounter at specific times in our lives, whose role we recall with fondness only after it is too late to thank or re-acquaint with them. Richard, may your memory be a blessing and may you rest in eternal peace my brother. I think of you each time I enter St. Mary's Parish and see that large, overstuffed chair in which you used to sit in the lobby.. God bless you my friend.
