Obituary of Gunther Kron

Gunther Kron, age 86 of Wheeling. Loving and devoted husband of Inge for 54 years. Beloved father of Scott (Julie) and Mark (Adrianne). Cherished Opa of Erin, Eric, Ali, Ella, Emma, and Lukas. Dear brother of Friedel Schmidt and Hilde Kron. Fond brother-in-law, uncle and friend of many. Günther Kron was educated and received his formal culinary training in Germany. After his education, Günther worked in some of the finest restaurants in Switzerland, France and Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 1956 and established himself quickly within the culinary circles. He held Executive Chef positions at the Glen View Club, The Abbey (Wisconsin), owned his own business, but spent the majority of his career as the Executive Chef for the leading airlines in the United States. Chef Günther Kron was instrumental in the development and designing of in-flight services, domestic and international flights. During his tenure with Sky Chefs, he served United States Presidents-Eisenhower, Nixon, Johnson and Ford, President Adenauer of West Germany, Egyptian President Sadat, and the Crown Prince of Japan. The highlight of his career was serving His Holiness, Pope John II during his visit to Chicago in 1979. In 1972, Günther was awarded the “Chef of the Year” Award by the International Wine and Food Society of Chicago. In 1976, Günther was part of a five man Sky Chefs team who attended the Culinary Olympics in Frankfurt, Germany. The team won a total of fourteen gold medals…more than any other team. Günther was a member of the American Culinary Federation, Chicago’s Chefs Association, Verband Der Köche in Germany, and Societe Centrale Suisse Des Employes d’Hotel et de Restaurant Helvetia. Since retirement, Günther’s special areas of interest included spending time with his wife and grandchildren, gardening, reading and traveling.
