Teresa and I enjoyed our friendship with John for the past fifteen years.
I met John and Maggie initially at the 7:30 A:M mass every Sunday at St. Philip The Apostle Catholic church in Northfield, Illinois. They always sat at the end of the last row, he was next to the center aisle.
Every week he wore a suit or sports coat with dress slacks and always the appropriate tie. Quickly I learned what a gentleman and his proud wife. Sometimes they took up the gifts for communion. Sometimes he was a volunteer usher.
A year or so after he lost Maggie, we got to know each other better. He became a full time usher and continued to be always sharply attired with shiny dress shoes. We had fun at St. Philip functions and he enjoyed dancing with laughter and refreshments.
Over the years I learned about his growing-up above a family owned tavern in Chicago. How he and Maggie enjoyed their marriage. His happy career with GBC. He drove further to church each week than the one mile to work from 301 Chipili Lane.
Once he quit driving I drove him to church on Sundays which was the least I could do for a fine man.
We missed him after he moved to Sunrise in Orland Park, though comforted because it was better for him.
A few years ago I was having a cold beer or two in a local tavern. The couple sitting next to me were talking about their daughter, a teaching golf professional, who had recently moved into Northbrook with her CPA husband and their new baby. A young proud family. One thing lead to another and guess what home they bought.
John and Maggie are now reunited in heaven knowing that 301 has a happy owner.
Sincerely, Joe and Teresa Salazar
