My memories of Joe Pafume go back a long way - to Marshall Field's and Northbrook. I became acquainted with his daughter Barbara when we both worked at Marshall Field's, in I believe 1961. I remember that her father would come by to visit her from time to time to see how she was doing. At Christmas, my father would always take us downtown to see Marshall Field's and all the magnificent decorations. I considered it a special privilege to know someone so important at Marshall Field's and responsible for all these events.
I also visited their home many times, mostly to pick up Barbara, as I also lived in Northbrook. Through those visits, I of course met the whole family. I remember the Pafume's as a very friendly, open, and busy family.
Although Joe Pafume's death is sad and truly the passing of an era, he certainly lived a full and valued life.

I was so sad to hear Joe had passed. For the first twelve years of my life I lived right across the street from him and have so many amazing memories of this man who is a father and friend to so many.
Out of our picture window on Timberlane Drive I could watch Joe putting up his flag each morning and the truly breathtaking Christmas flag pole he created for the holidays. Making sure the lava lamp was running properly, checking the fencing around the garden, playing hand pool, and drinking RC Cola are all staples of being at the Pafume's and something I will hold with me for the rest of my life.
Joe made such a wonderful and lasting impact on me and everyone he met. I am lucky to have known him. So sorry for you loss, sending prayers and hugs.

We were so very lucky to have been able to talk briefly to Joe the day before he died. He sounded so happy to hear our voices, but he was very tired. We promised to call the next day over coffee and talk some more, but that was not to be. What wonderful friends and neighbors we had in both Joe and Velma Pafume! Joe was a man of many talents and so knowledgeable and meticulous about his home and yard. He always could think of a way to solve a problem and was generous with his help. He enjoyed his mini Model T and each year at Summer's birthday party, he took all the children for rides around our neighborhood. Both he and Velma were well known for giving out the best candy at Halloween, having games for the kids to play, and keeping the famous scrapbook of costumes and how each child grew from year to year. He loved his little fig tree in the corner of the backyard and tried to fight the deer off with all matter of fencing, netting, and soil additives! Their Christmas light tree hung from their flag pole each year and it was beautiful. We were happy to see that from our picture window and copied it ourselves in later years. What a good life - 96 years strong - and he left behind such a wonderful big family! Robbie, Summer, and I send you off with our love and respect. You have left us with many happy memories! What an honor it has been to have had Joesph Pafume as my father-in-law. His was a life well-lived. It is fun to envision the fun-loving young Joe as tour director for American Express train tours to the Northwest, USO show MC and director, music teacher, and band member. His artistic eye and talent for design were evidenced in his work for Marshall Fields and in his sharing of those talents for his church home, Our Lady of the Brook. What I admired most about Joe though was not his talents, but his loving and selfless nature when it came to family. I have such warm memories of "Santa!s" visits, Model T drives in his neighborhood, and laughter-filled meals on the patio. What I value most was that Joe's loving and selfless nature was passed on to his son, my husband, Bruce. Like father, like son ... How I treasure having married into Joe!s family and being privileged to call him "Dad". I will miss Joe, but will think of him often as I catch a glimpse of him in Bruce, our children, and our grandchildren. Rest in peace, Dad. Your loving daughter-in-law, Joanne
