Sam was a driving force in the lives of many people especially athletes and coaches such as myself. Unfortunately, I didn’t meet him until moving to Chicago in my 40's at which time my 'racing years' were about over. He assured me he could have made me a champ and I took that as gold. From here on we shared training theories, talked skating and I always enjoyed hearing him boast about his children and grandchildren. After moving to Germany in '07, we stayed in touch via email until he wasn't able to correspond anymore. Thank you Sam Jr., for locating my inquiring emails and sharing the sad news. I will truly miss our conversations. I immensely treasure and am honored by his friendship. I hope to meet the rest of the family one-day and know you all will relish the memories and goodness Sam spread in the world. To the Poulos family - my deepest condolences for your loss and Godspeed Sotirios - you will be truly missed. Sam was generous in the time he spent with dry land training for any and all who came his way. He was always supportive off all skaters who sought his help. We appreciated his advice, anecdotes and good will at training, socially and at competitions. He was a one of a kind bright light in the skating community. Kira, Nora and Dan Fling

I have known Sam and his family most of my life and his passing leaves a tremendous void in my heart. About 50 years ago, Sam approached me and my parents and asked if I'd like to further improve my speed skating and begin training with his daughter, Leah. I knew that was no easy task but knew at some point the long hours training at Meadowhill as well as Sam's garage would pay off somehow. Although never fortunate to make an Olympic team, I enjoyed a 36 year career in the sport I love so much and I owe it all to Sam's generosity, warm heart, personality and constant desire to strive to do the best I could. I could not have accomplished what I did in skating (and to a degree life's accomplishments) without having Sam in my life. I could never thank you enough. See you again. I love you, my friend. May you Rest in Peace forever. Dick Martin

My condolences to Sam's family, especially his loving wife of 75 years. I didn't personally know Sam, but have had the pleasure of knowing his daughter, Leah, and his two grandchildren, Samantha and Mathew for many, many years. Through Leah, I learned of Sam's passion regarding working with young people, especially speed skating. I know he will be missed. May he now rest in peace. Doxiene C. Stewart Marana, Arizona
