My deepest sympathies for your loss. Craig was a fixture in the neighborhood. I could always count on seeing him happily riding his bike around the streets of Cambridge. Always up for a conversation, Craig was super friendly. He will be missed.

Craig,
You are deeply missed! Growing up next door to you, you were a true friend throughout my entire childhood. It was always a highlight to hearing your booming laugh whenever seeing you while visiting my parents back home as a young man.I have many dear memories of you playing catch and adding to the collection of bubble gum on the street while I grew up. I'll still think of you every time I return home and the neighborhood will never feel the same again. Thoughts and prayers to all friends and family. The world is an emptier place without you Craig.
Condolences,
Jason Ficks

My deepest condolences to the family for your loss.Truly heartbreaking. Our Heavenly Father gives us a beautiful thought when He promises us that soon death will be "swallowed up forever." (1 Cor. 15:54) Along with this, God also guarantees that ones who have died will be able to live again. (John 5:28,29) I hope these encouraging scriptures can bring you some comfort during this difficult time.

I wish to express my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Craig Smith. May you find comfort in your loving memories of Craig and in God’s promise to see our loved ones again through the resurrection. (Acts 24:15) What joy it will be to welcome back Craig to a beautiful, peaceful earth (Psalms 37:10,11,29) where all pain, sickness and death will be no more! (Rev 21:4) Hang on to all your happy memories of Craig and let these, along with all the promises of God, who cannot lie, bring you comfort and peace! My deepest sympathy!

Terry and Rick and families,
We moved in on Harvard Lane as soon as the house was ready in 1967. Craig was a part of all our lives growing up. Craig was always helping my brother Marty collect baseballs so he could throw them again. My sister Nancy and I used to ride bikes, fly kites he was everyone's best buddy. Always smiling and laughing. When we moved away we still saw Craig at school. We have very fond memories of Craig. Marty, Nancy and I have shared our memories of Craig and the old neighborhood we are so very sorry for your loss.

It is still so hard to wrap around the idea that Craig will no longer be coming down the street whether by bicycle or walking. The Cambridge neighborhood is feeling a great loss and at the same time blessed to have known and enjoyed Craig. Craig was an icon who brought smiles to everyone he passed, morning, noon or night. Touched by his gestures whether bringing the morning paper to our doorsteps, or handling our garbage cans, he taught kindness. There is an emptiness many of us will feel for some time when we step out in front and no longer see that happy, smiling face going by announcing a Cub win, or a quick update on what is happening in the neighborhood or just stopping and asking how our families are doing.
Rest in peace Craig, I know your smiling down on the whole subdivision and the memories you brought will be cherished. Missing you!

We were so very saddened to hear of Craig's passing!! He was "the mayor" of our little neighborhood. As he cycled through the neighborhood, stopping to talk to everyone, inquiring about our latest vacation, celebration, family event, new tree..... WHATEVER.... he became the thread that tied so many of us together. He knew everyone's names.... and our children's names.... and our grandchildren's names!! He delivered our newspaper (from the curb to our doorstep) he walked our garbage cans to the side of the house because we were working, he was ALWAYS cheerful and friendly and a REAL PRESENCE! (And if we didn't actually SEE him - we would definitely HEAR him as his booming voice would project down the street!) This past year we have definitely felt the loss of Craig among us on a daily basis... holding out the hope that by this summer he'd be back! Sadly - that is not to be!! We offer our sincere condolences to all of Craig's family at this time. Please know that he MATTERED to so many of us and he has been - and will continue to be - missed very much!!

When I purchased my home on Harvard Lane at the tail end of 2012, Craig was one of the first people I met. From that point forward, there weren't many days that passed when I didn't see Craig, either patrolling the neighborhood on his bike first thing in the morning (I would lay on my horn half a dozen times as I approached and passed him) or casually strolling up and down Harvard Lane, looking for a familiar face.
Craig’s genuine curiosity was surpassed only by his kindness and keen sense of humor. I quickly warmed up to his sarcasm and reveled in the comedy when he’d join my wife Kristen (whom he insisted on calling Christine) in mocking me for wearing old black dress shoes when doing yard work. He was rarely in short supply of a quick-witted comment or a friendly smile or waive of the hand.
Craig was also (at least in my eyes) the unofficial security task force on the block and as long Craig was around, I felt that all of the neighbors could rest a little easier, knowing that their homes had a watchful eye protecting them when we were gone for the weekend or away for work that day.
It is for all of these examples and so many more that Craig will be sincerely missed, but always fondly remembered.
If neighborhoods have a spirit, I think I can speak for everyone when I say that our neighborhood’s spirit seems a little less bright now.

Craig helped raise our children for these past 25 years. As a special friend and guardian in their youth, he continued to inspire them, and us all, in becoming kindlier, friendlier people. Craig was a special gift to our neighborhood. We are so very grateful to the entire Smith Family for sharing “Mister Craig” with us all these years. The love expressed through Craig is thanks to those who helped raise him, especially his immediate family. Job well done! Craig will be missed greatly but his memory can continue to inspire us all. With Love, Ed, Dawn, Matt, Kevin & Sara Kowynia

Our family has many found memories of Craig walking or driving his bike thru the neighborhood, talking with neighbors like us. Or those of him being a loving neighbor who shoveled sidewalks in the winter, mowed the cul-de-sac island in the summer or who beat us to bringing in our garbage cans. Those were his ways of showing love to his friends. He interacted with our children as they grew up and always asked about them after they moved away. He was a special part of our neighborhood that we will cherish and remember.

Terry and Rick,
I'm having a really hard time wrapping my head around Craig's passing. He's been a part of my life since we moved to Harvard Lane in 1967 and this neighborhood will never be the same. I'm finding comfort knowing he is at peace and has been reunited with your mom who he missed so much.
I can still hear him calling, Nan-cy, from the cul-de-sac and have been blessed to call him my friend.

We will miss our great friend and neighbor! I will never forget the countless hours I spent talking to Craig about our Chicago sports teams. Craig was always helping in the neighborhood, whether it was bringing up everyone's newspaper to their front door, bringing up the garbage cans to their garage doors, or shoveling our sidewalks in the winter time. If I ever needed a hand, Craig was there to help. Craig always had a cheerful hello. He enjoyed riding his bike all over the neighborhood and talking to everyone. Craig made our neighborhood so much better to live in. We were truly blessed to have had him on Harvard Lane. We will always remember him for who he was, not just for what he did..

We were so sorry to hear of the passing of our good friend. Craig was an instant friend to all, and everyone in Cambridge will miss his sidewalk visits. His memory will be cherished for years to come.
We will always be thankful that we had the opportunity to know Craig so well, and that we had the privilege of calling him a neighbor, a good friend, and a fellow Cubs Fan. Our front porch visits and conversations will be sadly missed.
We share in your grief at such a sad loss.
