Obituary of Norma F. Sobota

Please share a memory of Norma to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Norma F. Sobota nee Fisher, age 94, of Lincolnshire, IL, passed away peacefully at home on March 2, 2021. Beloved wife of the late Chester F. Sobota. Loving mother of Nancy, Frank (Eileen) and John (Marsha). Adored grandmother of Tracy, Michael John (Meghan) and Michael Frank. Cherished daughter of the late Anna Fisher and sister of the late Lawrence. Loving aunt, cousin, sister-in-law, and friend to many. Norma was born in Chicago and attended school in the north side of the city. She wed Chester F. Sobota in 1953 and celebrated 34 years of marriage before his early death. Always believing that you should provide for yourself, Norma had an active career and worked from the age of 14 until age 89. For over 50 years she was an executive administrative assistant at ITW, loving both her job and the company. Prior to joining ITW, she was employed with several companies as executive secretary. Coming from a family of musical entertainers, Norma loved music and singing. She also had many other interests including movies, reading, puzzles, travel, politics and, most of all, being with her family and friends. If Norma’s family and friends could use one phrase to describe her it would be “happy and joyful.” She had a positive and encouraging outlook on life that was an inspiration to all who knew her. In a letter to her family a while back, Norma summed up her year below which also describes all the things most important to her throughout her life. “I’m happy to be alive—in reasonably good health for a gal my age. My year has been filled with love for my children, their spouses, and grandchildren…with many good friends…interesting work…a kind and generous boss…lots of laughs and fun (for me, important) …plus a lovely home to enjoy. I’m fortunate to have everything I could need at this point in my life—and the time to travel if I wish. All my love always to all of you, Mom/Grandma/Friend” Services for Norma will be held on a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate in memory of Norma F. Sobota to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago (see details below). Norma’s brother, Lawrence, spent several years at Children's Memorial Hospital before dying at age 11 of rheumatic fever. In memory of Norma F. Sobota, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, 225 East Chicago Avenue, Box 4, Chicago, IL 60611 or at luriechildrens.org/donate. These gifts will support the Access for Every Child fund, which allows Lurie Children’s to continue to provide expert care to every child served at the hospital, regardless of a family’s ability to pay. This video was made for Norma’s 80th birthday celebration and portrays some of the important memories, family, and friends in her life.
